Get involved

Volunteer with us

Our volunteers are the heart of Behind the Smile. If you have a little time and a lot of compassion, you could help someone feel less alone — and find it every bit as rewarding yourself.

You don't need any special qualifications to volunteer — just warmth, patience and a willingness to listen. Many of our volunteers have their own experience of mental ill health or bereavement, and that lived understanding is exactly what makes peer support so powerful.

We'll always provide full support and training, and you'll never be asked to do more than you feel comfortable with.

Ways to help

How you could get involved

Support our groups

Help welcome people, make the teas, and be a friendly, steady presence at our peer support groups and craft sessions.

Offer a listening ear

Trained one-to-one volunteers give people space to talk things through, quietly and without judgement.

Lend a hand at events

From fundraising walks to awareness stalls, there's always a role for people who like to muck in and make things happen.

Share your skills

Admin, social media, photography, craft or facilitation — whatever you're good at, chances are we could use it.

Male volunteers especially needed: we're keen to launch a men-only peer support group, and we're looking for male volunteers to help make it happen.

Have the time and the heart?

We'd love to hear from you. Get in touch and we'll find a role that fits around your life.
